Relationships and Sexuality Education

Relationship and sexuality education has a positive and empowering role to play in the education of learners and is essential in supporting them to achieve the four purposes as part of a whole school approach. Helping learners to form and maintain a range of relationships, all based on mutual trust and respect, is at the core of relationship and sexuality education. These relationships are critical to developing emotional well-being, resilience and empathy.

Relationship and sexuality education in the curriculum focuses on three general strands:

Relationships and identity: helping learners to develop the skills they need to develop healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships with other people, and helping them make sense of their thoughts and feelings.

Sexual health and well-being: helping learners to turn to factual sources about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being enabling them to make informed decisions throughout their lives.

Empowerment, safety and respect: helping to protect learners from all forms of discrimination, violence, abuse and neglect and enabling them to recognize unsafe or harmful relationships and situations, helping them to know when, how and where to ask for help and advice.

Developmentally Appropriate RSE

It is a requirement that the RSE provided must be developmentally appropriate for learners. Therefore, in accordance with the aims of the school’s RSE Policy we will take account of a range of factors such as the learners’ age, knowledge and maturity and any additional learning needs to ensure that our provision is developmentally appropriate for each learner.

Monitoring RSE

Although RSE is a whole school responsibility, RSE will be monitored, reviewed and evaluated by those with responsibility for RSE at Ysgol Caer Elen in line with the school’s curriculum policy. This includes:

  • (a) The representative from the Governing body with responsibility for RSE
  • (b) The Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team
  • (c) Pupils
